TRAIN – Training and Research for Academic Newcomers

About the TRAIN Program

The objectives of the TRAIN program are to develop, implement and evaluate a structured professional development training program consisting of 7 modules for new academics (PhD students, assistants, junior professors, post-docs of not more than three years work experience) at four Western Balkan universities (University of Sarajevo, University of Belgrade, University of Novi Sad and University of Montenegro). Through the program the new academics build the knowledge, skills, motivation and confidence to enhance their own practice in ways that will improve student learning, their own research and their contribution to society and industry. The program also aims to improve collaboration among new academics, expanding their networks and enhancing their capacity for educational leadership, enabling them to positively influence the change.

The 7 modules are:

1.  Research Methodology, Scientific Writing and Result Presentation

  • a. Humanities and Social Sciences
  • b. Technical, Natural and Life Sciences

2.  Higher Education Didactics

3.  Preparing Funding Applications & Project Management

4.  Communication & Presentation Skills

5.  Entrepreneurial Skills

6.  Networking & Teamwork

7.  Designing Higher Education Curricula

European trainers who are experts in their areas have developed a curriculum for seven TRAIN modules in partnership with local trainers from Western Balkan universities. After the curriculum had been developed and shared, a pilot training took place at each participating Western Balkan University (October and November 2013). The feedback was gathered from the pilot phase and certain parts of the curriculum adjusted.

From the pool of its own staff each Western Balkan University selected 16 trainers who will continue to deliver the TRAIN modules at home university in future. In May 2014, EU and WB trainers came together in a workshop in Montenegro to discuss and jointly prepare the future implementation of the modules. The WB trainers will deliver all future TRAIN modules at their home universities starting in September 2014.

We truly hope that this TRAIN moodle will provide you with interesting materials and possibilities to meet colleagues and exchange experience. Enjoy!
